Before new flooring, planters or structures go on top, the existing membrane is inspected, and anything fixed through it must be detailed so it does not create a leak. Raised pedestal flooring is often used so the membrane stays intact and accessible.

The roof's capacity and the fixing method are confirmed by an engineer, especially for planters filled with soil and water, which are very heavy. Community rules may limit the height and visibility of roof structures.
