Junctions between floor and wall, pipe penetrations and drains are reinforced with tape or collars, because that is where membranes fail first. The membrane must also connect to the drain properly, so water that gets under the tiles still has a way out.
Most Dubai bathroom renovations use a brush- or roller-applied liquid membrane in two coats, which handles corners and penetrations well. Sheet membranes give a more uniform thickness and suit large wet rooms. Either can perform; what matters is that it is applied to the manufacturer's coverage, allowed to cure, and not punctured by later trades.
A flood test — plugging the drain and leaving water on the membrane for a set period — proves the waterproofing before it is buried. It costs a day and saves a ceiling. In apartments, many buildings require it, and some want to witness it. Ask your contractor to include it and to show you the result.
