01BATHROOM REMODELING
Tiles are the most visible decision in a bathroom renovation and the one owners spend longest on. The best choice balances looks with slip resistance, cleaning, grout lines and how the tile behaves over years of hard water.

Natural marble is unique and luxurious but softer and porous: it etches with acidic cleaners and needs sealing. In a family bathroom, porcelain on the floor and stone on a feature wall gives the look with less upkeep.
Large-format tiles reduce grout lines, which makes small bathrooms look bigger and cleaning easier, but they need a very flat substrate and are hard to fall towards a drain. Shower floors often use smaller tiles or mosaics so the floor can follow the fall. Floor tiles in wet areas should carry a slip rating suitable for bare feet.
Hard water leaves limescale in grout. Epoxy grout resists staining far better than cement grout in showers and is worth the extra cost there.
Order all the tiles for a room from one batch, with extra for cuts and future repairs — shades vary between batches. Imported or specialist tiles can take weeks to arrive, so choose them before demolition starts, not after.
