01BATHROOM REMODELING
Moving fixtures can transform an awkward bathroom, but every move depends on drainage. Knowing what can move easily and what cannot lets you design within reality instead of paying for a plan that later has to be redrawn.

The toilet's large waste is the least flexible: every metre of extra run needs depth for the fall, which means building up the floor or cutting into the slab. Basins and showers have small wastes and can usually move further, especially along a wall that already carries pipework.
In a villa with a ground-floor slab, new drainage runs can often be cut into the floor and connected to the external manholes. Upstairs, pipes run in the floor void or ceiling of the room below, so moving fixtures may mean opening the ceiling under the bathroom. In apartments the soil stack is shared and fixed, and buildings rarely permit cutting the slab, which limits big moves.
Swapping the positions of a bath and a shower, moving a basin to the opposite wall, or turning a long bathroom into a wet zone at one end and dry zone at the other are typically achievable. Moving a toilet across the room or into a former cupboard needs a site survey before anyone promises it.
