01KITCHEN REMODELING
The worktop takes more daily punishment than any other surface in the home: hot pans, turmeric, lemon juice and chopping. Each material handles these differently, and the right choice depends on how you cook as much as how it looks.

Granite is hard and heat-tolerant but needs periodic sealing. Marble is beautiful and stays cool, but etches with acids and stains with spices — it suits bakers more than heavy cooks. Sintered stone and porcelain slabs resist heat, stains and UV, and are increasingly used for outdoor kitchens too.
Stone and quartz worktops are templated after the base cabinets are fixed and level, then cut off site and installed. That gap in the programme should be expected. Cut-outs for undermount sinks and hobs, and the edge profile, are agreed at templating. Joins are positioned where they will be least visible, and a long run may need one.
Thicker slabs look more substantial but cost more and weigh more; thinner slabs with a mitred edge can give the look of thickness. Square edges look modern but chip more easily than slightly rounded ones in a busy kitchen.
