Swollen board under the sink, sagging shelves, hinges pulling out of the sides or delaminating edges mean the carcasses are near the end of their life, and new doors on old boxes will not hide it for long. A contractor should open every cabinet and inspect before recommending refacing.
Refacing replaces doors, drawer fronts, visible end panels, kickboards and handles, often with new soft-close hinges and drawer runners. The worktop can stay or be replaced at the same time. The kitchen remains usable for most of the job, which makes it popular with landlords between tenancies and families who cannot go without a kitchen.
If you want to change the layout, add an island, fit integrated appliances that need different cabinet sizes, or the carcasses are failing, a full replacement is better value: refacing locks you into the existing box sizes and positions. Replacement also lets you correct problems like poor corner storage that refacing cannot fix.
