01KITCHEN REMODELING
An island adds worktop, storage and a place to sit, and it anchors an open-plan room. It also needs space around it, and if it holds a sink or hob, services underneath it. Getting the size and position right decides whether it helps or gets in the way.

In practice, many Dubai apartment kitchens are too narrow for a full island, and a peninsula — attached to a wall or run of units at one end — gives most of the benefit. A taped-out outline on the floor before ordering is the simplest test.
An island with a sink needs a waste and water supply run through the floor, which is straightforward in a villa slab and harder in an apartment. An island hob needs a ceiling extractor or a downdraft unit and a power or gas supply. A plain island — prep space, storage and seating — needs only power for sockets and is the simplest and most flexible option.
If the island has stools, allow a worktop overhang deep enough for knees and a counter height to match the stools you intend to buy. On the working side, deep drawers for pans are more useful than cupboards. Sockets in the island, positioned discreetly on the end or under the overhang, are easily forgotten and difficult to add later.
