A site survey, and where there is doubt an engineer's assessment, comes before any design. Removing a load-bearing element needs a beam, engineering calculations and approval.
In apartments, building management approves any wall removal, and walls containing shared risers or fire-rated partitions usually cannot be touched.
A closed kitchen contains cooking smells and heat; an open one spreads them. A ducted extractor that vents outside, rather than a recirculating hood, makes open-plan cooking far more pleasant — but it needs a route to an external wall or a riser. In many Dubai homes, family cooking with strong spices is the reason a glass partition or sliding door is added to keep the option of closing the kitchen.
Once the wall goes, the floor usually needs to run continuously from kitchen to living area, so flooring is part of the project. Lighting is planned as one scheme across both spaces, with separate circuits so the kitchen can be lit for cooking and dimmed for dining. An island or peninsula often replaces the wall as the divider.
