Worktops come next: laminate, quartz and natural stone sit at very different price points, and stone adds templating and cut-outs. Appliances can be anything from supplied-by-owner to a full integrated range. Finally, whether the layout stays or moves decides how much plumbing, electrical and gas work sits behind the walls.
Keeping the sink, cooker and fridge where they are is the single biggest saving available, because it avoids rerouting drainage, power and ventilation.
Removing the old kitchen and disposing of it, making good walls and floors behind it, new lighting under cabinets, the backsplash, and electrical upgrades for modern appliances are frequently left out of headline prices. So are building-management deposits in apartments. A quote that does not list them is not cheaper, only incomplete.
Ask every contractor to price the same specification: the same board, door finish, worktop material and thickness, and the same appliance list. Then compare line by line. A low total often hides a thinner worktop, a cheaper carcass or appliances priced as an allowance that will rise later.
