SPC, vinyl and floating engineered wood are the most common overlays; new tiles can also be bonded over old ones with suitable primers and adhesives, though this adds more height.
A tap test finds hollow tiles, which must be fixed or removed. Deep grout lines may need filling so they do not show through thin floors. The new floor height is checked against doors, thresholds, kitchen plinths and wardrobe doors — a few millimetres can mean trimming every door.
Cracked, hollow or uneven floors, wet areas that need new waterproofing, and situations where height is tight call for removal. It is noisier and slower, but it gives a reliable base and a chance to correct the screed.
